Celadon is an eggshell color gene that makes Coturnix quail eggs blue. It is a recessive gene, so the hen must have two copies of the gene to lay blue Celadon eggs.
Roosters are also important to a Celadon line, as it’s not just the hens who contribute Celadon genes to offspring. In order for a Celadon line to be “true blue”, both parents need to have two copies of the gene in order to produce offspring who all lay blue eggs.
Celadon eggs are shiny and are either solid light blue, or solid light blue with tiny, raised speckles.
